A Second Chance

Lisa had always wanted to learn how to drive, but she was afraid of making mistakes. She had received her driving license two years ago, but she rarely drove because she did not feel confident.
Her husband usually drove when they went somewhere together. When she needed to go shopping, she took the bus or asked her sister to drive her. Lisa knew that she needed to face her fear, but she kept putting it off.
One Saturday morning, her husband had to travel to another city for work. Lisa suddenly realized that she needed to drive to the supermarket because they had almost no food at home.
She looked at the car parked outside the house. For several minutes, she stood near the window and thought about what she should do.
“I can take the bus,” she said to herself. “But I need to stop being afraid.”
Finally, she took her keys and walked toward the car.
Lisa sat in the driver’s seat and took a deep breath. She adjusted the mirror, put on her seat belt, and started the engine.
At first, everything went well. She drove slowly through the quiet streets near her house. She was nervous, but she tried to stay calm.
After about ten minutes, she reached a busy road. There were many cars, buses, and people crossing the street.
Lisa’s hands became cold. She wanted to turn around and go home.
Then she remembered something her driving teacher had told her two years earlier.
“Being nervous does not mean you cannot do it. Take your time and pay attention.”
Lisa took another deep breath and continued driving.
A few minutes later, she made a small mistake. She stopped too far from the traffic line and the driver behind her became impatient. He sounded his horn.
Lisa felt embarrassed, but she did not panic. She waited for the right moment and continued.
When she finally arrived at the supermarket, she parked the car and sat quietly for a few seconds.
“I did it,” she whispered.
She smiled because she realized that the difficult part was not driving. The difficult part was believing that she could do it.
Lisa went into the supermarket and bought everything her family needed. She felt proud of herself.
When she returned to the car, she noticed something unexpected. She was no longer as nervous as before.
The journey home was easier. She even enjoyed listening to music while driving.
When her husband came home that evening, he was surprised to see the groceries on the kitchen table.
“Did you go shopping?” he asked.
“Yes,” Lisa replied with a smile. “And I drove there myself.”
Her husband looked surprised and then smiled proudly.
“That’s great! I knew you could do it.”
Lisa laughed. “I wish I had done it sooner.”
Her husband looked at her and said, “Sometimes we wait because we are afraid. But when we finally try, we discover that the thing we feared was not as difficult as we imagined.”
Lisa thought about his words. They were true. She had spent two years avoiding something simply because she was afraid of making mistakes.
The following weekend, Lisa decided to drive to a nearby town. It was farther than the supermarket, so she planned the trip carefully.
She checked the map, filled the car with fuel, and made sure she had everything she needed.
The trip was not perfect. She took the wrong road once and had to turn around, but she did not feel afraid.
Instead, she laughed at her mistake and continued driving.
When she arrived at the town, she felt even more confident. She spent the afternoon walking around, visiting small shops, and having coffee at a quiet café.
On her way home, Lisa realized that learning to drive had taught her more than just how to control a car.
It taught her that fear becomes smaller when we face it. It taught her that mistakes are normal. Most importantly, it taught her that sometimes we need to give ourselves a second chance.
From that day on, Lisa stopped saying, “I can’t do it.”
Instead, whenever she faced something difficult, she said, “I haven’t learned how to do it yet, but I can try.”
